In less than 30 days, the government is on the verge of shutting down, significantly affecting various aspects of American life. Soldier finances are one area directly impacted. This financial uncertainty only adds to the already long list of reasons why many young Americans are reluctant to enlist in the Army. Our Thoughts – Stating the Obvious

Another pending shutdown is an excellent example of why current service members want to transition to the private sector, and America’s youth see other industries as more favorable. The public lack of understanding by political leaders of how recruitment, enlistment, and paying the troops are integral to the country’s strategic plan is embarrassing to witness. Politician’s constant display of confusion, carelessness, and inability to show the same work ethic and dedication they expect of service members only highlights the lack of understanding of the military.

Additionally, the United States officially moved beyond what we like to unofficially call the G-FLOT (Generational Forward Line of Troops). We define the G-FLOT as the period between conflicts where the military is deprioritized, an authorized reduction in force (RIF), budget cuts, and the flight of experienced leaders. We unscientifically use the 15-year generational gap between the Vietnam War (1964-1975) and Desert Storm (1990-1991) or the 10-year lull between Desert Storm and the Global War on Terrorism (2001-) (Defense Manpower Data Center 2023). Between these wars, the Army went from a total force of 784,333 in 1975 to 480,801 in 2001. No matter how you view it, the military lost talent and experience and underwent an unforced reset. Civilians will see these periods without a major conflict as times of peace.

Although it is not official, the battle-hardened Soldiers of the GWOT are slowly making a clean break for the exit. This cohort includes thousands of service members that the government spent millions training. The reasons vary, but after some data scraping, we found many comments regarding social policy, lack of focus on training, political agendas, resources, poor manning, and poor fiscal policy are topics found on Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Mastodon. Politicians fail to understand that the Army cannot make a Platoon Sergeant or Operations Officer overnight. In less than four years, installations received new soldiers who were not combat veterans. Some of them are taking their first command and need the guidance of leaders who will provide the challenge and rigor necessary to maintain a certain level of competency until the next combat operation.

The United States needs experienced soldiers to stay the course. Budget slowdowns or cuts do not benefit the warfighter. The military is a people-driven organization, and the government is asking to maintain the current operational tempo with a shrinking Army while indirectly threatening soldiers with no pay annually.

It doesn’t add up.
